Looking after your mental health this festive season

Fraser Coast Mates, Christmas, Mental Health, Hervey Bay, Maryborough

Where has 2023 gone? We’re just about to hit another festive season filled with team celebrations, Christmas parties and the new year. While this can be an exciting time filled with connection and joy, for some it can also bring up very complicated feelings and be quite lonely.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by facing the upcoming holiday season, here’s our top tips on how to look after yourself during this time:

Protect your mental health with boundaries

Not sure how you will handle that family Christmas or a long list of social occasions? It’s time to set some boundaries with friends and family to protect yourself. This could look like putting a timeframe on how long you will stay at a party or saying no to those events that you don’t believe will have a positive effect on your wellbeing.

Keep your routines consistent

At a time when we are often rushing to complete work for the year, indulging in food and drink and attending social occasions, it can be easy for daily routines to fall behind. Remember that routines like daily exercise, good nutrition and mindfulness can help refill your cup and ensure you are looking after yourself at a busy time.

Reflecting on the year that was
Schedule in some time for yourself between now and the new year and reflect on how you felt during 2023 – what helped you to move through difficult emotions and what brought you joy. You can then make a roadmap for how you are going to put your mental health first in 2024.

Know that it is okay if you struggle at this time of year

There are many reasons that you may not find endless joy in the summer holiday season – you could be grieving the loss of a loved one, feeling lonely and isolated, overwhelmed with all the ‘to-do’s’ and so much much more. If you are feeling this way, know that it is okay. And if you have a mate that you know may find this time challenging? Make sure to check in with them.
